The Ports & Logistics sector employs around 18,000 workers, with a direct economic value to the Lincolnshire economy of £700 million per year. Greater Lincolnshire's ports include Immingham & Grimsby, the UK's largest port by tonnage, handling 54. 7m tonnes of cargo every year. Focused on bulk materials and car import/export, these ports represent an essential global gateway on our doorstep where goods can be delivered to 75% of the UK’s population within just a four hour transit time. In addition to import-export activities, the docks underpin distribution for the Agri-food sector for the northern area of Greater Lincolnshire. Staying in the north, Humberside Airport offers air freight related to the local seafood industry, while to the south, two smaller ports in Boston and Sutton Bridge provide a specific focus on cargo such as timber and grain. These ports offer easy access to the major A1 road as well as the East Coast Main Line rail link, opening up north and south distribution opportunities. Freight transport by road is the largest logistics activity, accounting for almost 8,000 jobs and with a geographical focus in South Holland and North East Lincolnshire. There is a clear link between logistics and Agri-food production in these areas. Storage and warehousing is also a fast growing activity concentrated in North Lincolnshire.
