AAT research shows employers prefer apprenticeship and work experience to a degree

With results day just around the corner, AAT have released a survey to find employers top priorities when it comes to hiring new staff.

With A level and GCSE results day just around the corner, AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) have released a survey in which they asked 1000 employers what their top priorities are when it comes to hiring new staff.

The survey found that 49% of these employers prefer relevant apprenticeships or previous work experience on a candidate CV, compared to 24% who favoured relevant degree qualifications.

71% of the Employers who prioritise work experience and apprenticeships do so because it demonstrates the candidates have skills in a practical setting, and 63% said it indicates they have a better understanding of the world of work.

The top ten priorities Employers look for in a candidate are:

  1. How they'd fit into the company culture
  2. How much experience they have
  3. Their general personality
  4. How well qualified they are
  5. A proactive attitude
  6. Ability to work in a team
  7. Showing a willingness to learn
  8. Ability to self-manage and take initiative
  9. Showing ambition
  10. Communication skills

Suzie Webb, AAT’s Director of Education and Development, said: “Ahead of A-level results day, we wanted to inform young people about the things employers are looking for, to help them have a clear idea of what they need to consider as they think about their careers. Many people still think that having a university degree will be most valued by employers, but our research suggests this is not always the case.”

And if you are looking for a job, maybe have a think about how you are perceived on social media! 49% of employers have used candidate social media profiles to determine if they are right for the role.

This results day make sure you are looking into all career paths for you. Take a look at case studies from apprentices in your area and read about their experiences!
