What you'll do

You may work in:

• abattoirs – as a slaughterman or woman, humanely killing and preparing livestock
• wholesale meat factories – cutting, de-boning and preparing carcasses before they are sold to retailers
• butcheries – specialising in preparing meat in line with instructions from caterers
• meat or poultry processing plants – producing and packing products for the retail and catering industries

Depending on where you work, you may use knives and other cutting equipment, like a band saw, to cut and prepare carcasses. You may also have some delivery duties.

Role Training

There are no set requirements, but employers may prefer you to have some GCSEs.

Forklift truck experience may be helpful.

You may also need a driving licence for delivery duties.

You must be licensed and aged 18 or over to work as a slaughterman or woman

What you'll do

You could work in a wide range of businesses and industries, public services, utilities, defence and research. 

You'll work closely with project managers, business analysts and graphic designers, to find out what the client wants and the best way to achieve it. 

Usually, you’ll work in a team.

You could work on a wide variety of projects, from financial databases to robotics to apps for phones and tablets. You may use a number of programming languages or project management tools.

Your day-to-day tasks may include:

• talking through requirements with the client and the development team
• taking part in technical design and progress meetings
• writing or amending computer code
• testing software and fixing problems
• keeping accurate records of the development process, changes and results
• carrying out trials and quality checks before release
• maintaining and supporting systems once they're up and running
• As an experienced developer, you may supervise a programming team and provide feedback on coding work.

Role Training

You may be able to get into this job through an apprenticeship if you've developed some programming skills and can show a strong interest in the subject.

Other suitable qualifications are a foundation degree, HND or degree in computing or a related subject, like:

Some companies will accept you onto their graduate training scheme without an IT-related degree if you understand programming languages and frameworks, project management and development methods.

You could also study for a postgraduate IT conversion qualification.

Role Description

Agronomists have a wide range of work, but their role is best summed up as a “crop doctor.” They are concerned with the health and well-being of crops used for food production, fuel, and land reclamation. Agronomists conduct experiments to develop the best methods for increasing the quality and production of crops. Based on their experiments, agronomists work with farmers to help them grow the best possible crops, such as corn, cotton, soybeans, and wheat. They have an extensive knowledge of chemistry, biology, economics, earth science, ecology, and genetics. 

An agronomist spends time in the lab going over crop data that has been collected to find out how to improve the next generation. They have to think critically and solve problems concerning the planting, harvesting, and cultivation of crops. They also develop methods for protecting the crops from weeds, pests, and harsh climates. After they have written up their research, an agronomist will make presentations and speeches about their findings and present their ideas to farmers who can use the information for their own harvests. An agronomist also spends a lot of time traveling and meeting with farmers, working with them to improve crop efficiency and looking at any problems the farmer may be experiencing. 

There are a variety of roles an agronomist can specialize in: 

Research
Research in agronomy includes crop productivity, genetic engineering, and conservation practises. Research agronomists often work in labs but also perform large amounts of field work. Almost all research agronomists have a master’s or doctorate degree in agronomy or a related field. 

Crop Production and Management
These types of agronomists most often work with field crops. They manage crop planting and harvesting, and implement more efficient farming practises. This role may also include the management of recreational areas, like golf courses and sports fields. This job usually involves a lot of time working outdoors. 

Sustainable Development
Agronomists in this field work with all kinds of agricultural projects, ranging from large high-tech farms to smaller individual farms in developing nations. Whatever the size, this kind of agronomist is concerned with helping farmers develop and implement practises that ensure operations remain economically and environmentally viable for the future. 

Soil and Water Conservation
Agronomists involved in this field are often scientists and engineers. They might implement practises to improve water quality, manage runoff, and control erosion. Depending on the job, conservation agronomists may spend time outdoors, in an office, or both.

Role Training

Having experience and a good knowledge of the farming processes and crops is a great starting path to become an agronomist, however an agricultural qualification can also be gained.

The courses that provide an agricultural qualification are as follows:

Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Diplomas or extended Diplomas in Agricultural Business Management (QCF)

City and Guilds Level 4 Diplomas or extended Diplomas in Agricultural Business Management 

Foundation Degree in Agricultural Business Management or Animal Studies

BSc (Hons) Degree in Agriculture or similar subjects

Role Description

1. Entry requirements

There are no set requirements. You could start this career with a background in journalism, marketing or IT, or with business experience.

You’ll usually need experience of writing content, although not necessarily online. You could gain this by:

• blogging or writing on social media 
• writing marketing materials or newsletters 
• volunteering for a student newspaper, charity or community group

Knowledge of web design, desktop publishing and photo editing will be useful. A portfolio of work to show employers would also be helpful.

You could also take a course that would teach you some of the skills needed for producing web content, like journalism, publishing, media and communications, or PR and marketing.

2. Skills required

You’ll need:

3. What you'll do

Your day-to-day duties might include:

• taking a lead role in maintaining and developing a site

• writing reports for senior managers, clients and partnership organisations 
• carrying out quality assurance checks on content 
• reporting technical problems to IT support staff 
• The type of content you might work on could include:
• e-commerce, like online shopping or banking 
• product advertising and retail catalogues 
• local, national and international news reports

Starter: £25,000 to £28,000

Experienced: £32,000 to £40,000

5. Working hours, patterns and environment

You’ll usually work 35 to 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday. You may sometimes need to work overtime to meet deadlines.

Most of your work will be office-based at a computer. There may be some out-of-office duties, like attending meetings with clients or partners.

6. Career path and progression

You could progress into information management, search engine optimisation (SEO), technical web development or wider information planning and policy roles.

In the pharmaceutical, food or brewing industries, your work will include:

In agriculture and the environment, your work will include:

As a biochemist in education, you could work in universities, colleges and schools, or medical, veterinary or dental schools.

Role Training

You'll usually need a science degree. For jobs in industry or research, you may also need a postgraduate qualification (MSc or PhD).

Relevant first or higher degree subjects include:

In the NHS, you can train by following the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP).

Role Description

Your day-to-day duties might include:

• assessing the environmental impact of agricultural production methods
• supervising construction projects, like land drainage, reclamation and irrigation
• solving engineering problems, like designing all-terrain vehicles to move over uneven ground in different weather conditions
• testing and installing new equipment, like harvesters, crop sprayers and logging machinery
• using  GPS, weather data and computer modelling to advise farmers and businesses on land use
• planning service and repair programmes for machinery
• You may also manage and coordinate sales, marketing and technical support.

Role Training

You’ll need a foundation degree, HND or degree in:

agricultural engineering

environmental engineering

electrical or mechanical engineering

If you’ve got a further education qualification in a land-based engineering subject, or relevant experience, you could start as an agricultural engineering technician. You’d then complete further study to qualify as an engineer.

5. Working hours, patterns and environment

You'll usually work 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. You may occasionally work evenings and weekends.

You'll be based in an office but may travel to meet clients and attend events.

You may need a full driving licence.

6. Career path and progression

With experience, you could become a marketing manager.

You could also become a freelance marketing consultant, or move into areas like advertising, sales or public relations.

What you'll do

You could work on one of the main types of farm — livestock (animals), arable (crops) or mixed (animals and crops). 

Your day-to-day tasks may include:

• planning how the farm will run 
• setting budget and production targets 
• buying and selling animals or produce 
• keeping financial and stock records 
• recruiting, training and supervising staff

You may do practical farm work, like looking after livestock, driving tractors and other machinery, or harvesting crops. You may also have responsibility for other areas like a farm shop, horse riding facilities or tourist accommodation.

Role Training

There are no set requirements. You’ll need practical farming experience, gained by working as a supervisor, dairy or arable unit manager, or assistant manager.

Most farm managers have a qualification in agriculture, like a foundation degree, HND or degree in a subject like agriculture or farm business management.
